Groundhog Day Storms the Web
by Claudine Zap
Groundhog Day is almost upon us, when marmot meteorologists take over the weather report to answer the pressing question: Is spring almost here, or are we subject to six more weeks of winter — and maybe more important, are rodents ever right?
Searches on Yahoo! have forecasted a storm of interest, including “what is groundhog day,” “when is groundhog day,” and “history of groundhog day.”
The story goes that on February 2, if the groundhog (also known as a woodchuck) emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. No shadow means an early spring.
The history of this now American tradition stems from pagan and Christian holidays brought over from Europe that looked to hibernating animals to signal the end of winter. The Germans used hedgehogs as their weather guides. In Pennsylvania, early American settlers found groundhogs, not hedgehogs, and the forecasting began in the new country with a new rodent.
Thanks to the movie “Groundhog Day,” the marmot Punxsutawney Phil has reached celebrity status. The supposedly 125-year-old rodent, who gained fame in the comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, boasts a Facebook page along with media hype.
So how accurate is the forecast from Punxsutawney Phil? According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Phil’s reading is 100% accurate, natch. But the National Climatic Data Center disagrees, noting that its research shows “no predictive skill for the groundhog during the most recent years of this analysis.” The Stormfax Almanac concurs, judging the Pennsylvania prognosticator to be correct a not-very-impressive 39% of the time.
But perhaps that’s not all that surprising: As the Christian Science Monitor points out, no weather forecaster would dare deliver predictions further than a few days out. And they’ve got high-tech gadgets at their fingertips.
But in this case, tradition rules, and across the country, reasonable people turn to rodents for their weather report — and the results can be unpleasant. The most infamous groundhog has to be Staten Island Chuck, who gained notoriety for biting New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg a few years back. Other groundhogs emerge on the day to make their own, possibly contradictory, predictions: The Huffington Post tracked down lesser-known furry mammals who forecast.
Groundhog or no, the first day of spring is officially March 20, and it can’t come soon enough.

The update also adds Catalan, Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, and Ukrainian language support.
The update also resolves a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep (something one of Pocket-lint’s Mac was having problems with), and other too boring to mention bugs and issues.
The update also adds RAW support for a range of new cameras recently released including the new Compact System Camera offerings from Nikon.

Facebook IPO plans released along with Zuckerberg’s wages and details of how it earns its cash
Social Networked
Facebook has announced its IPO plans on Wednesday and with it open the doors for the first time for the general public to see how the social networking site works, and revealing some of the juicier stats it has been hiding up until now.
Those looking to invest will no doubt be interested to hear that Zuckerberg’s company is looking for around $5bn of investment from the sale of shares which should still value the company at the incredibly high $100bn figure that has been floated around by those that are interested.
“Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission – to make the world more open and connected,” says Mark Zuckerberg in the filing.
Still it didn’t stop Facebook earning $3.7bn in revenue in 2011 up from $1.9bn in 2010 giving Facebook profits of $1bn in 2011 and meaning it has around $3.9bn in the bank according to the paperwork.
Zuckerberg, the company’s 27-year-old CEO and Chairman, will retain the most stock (28.4 per cent) and in a similar stock deal to Google the biggest voting power as the stocks he owns are better than the stocks any individual can buy.
The filing also showed that Mark Zuckerberg currently earns $500,000 a year plus bonus, plus almost $700 spent on chartering planes for himself, friends, and family.?That mammoth salary isn’t set to last however. It has been suggested by him and agreed by the board that his salary in 2013 will drop to just a $1, presumably off the back of the massive amount of money (he will be worth around $28bn) that he will earn from the sale of shares in the IPO.
But it is the company’s reliance on Zynga that is most surprising. Zynga accounts for a whopping 12 per cent of the company’s revenue in 2011.
“In 2011, Zynga accounted for approximately 12% of our revenue, which amount was comprised of revenue derived from payments processing fees related to Zynga’s sales of virtual goods and from direct advertising purchased by Zynga. Additionally, Zynga’s apps generate a significant number of pages on which we display ads from other advertisers. If the use of Zynga games on our Platform declines, if Zynga launches games on or migrates games to competing platforms, or if we fail to maintain good relations with Zynga, we may lose Zynga as a significant Platform developer and our financial results may be adversely affected,” says Facebook in the documents it has filed as part of the Initial Public Offering.
That’s great news for Zynga, and possibly bad news for Facebook. What is clearer now though, is how many people are actively using the social network and how often.
According to the filing, there are now more than 845m monthly active users (MAU) of Facebook up 39 per cent on the December figures from 2010. Europe is the biggest Facebook user it seems with the country breaking being:?179 million MAU in the USA, 229m in Europe, 212m in Asia and 225m for the Rest of World.
That translates to 483 million people signing into the service every day, although Facebook is keen to point out that some of those might not be real unique people, but mobile apps autonomously checking in on their own, or even people with more than two Facebook accounts.
Still of those 845m, over half (425m) used Facebook mobile products and all 845m press that Like button or use Facebook Comments over 2.7bn times a day.
The stocks and therefore the chance to buy a piece of Facebook will go on sale later this year in June.

New iPod nano with camera pictures appear online
Real deal?
Every September from 2005 until 2010 we were treated to a new generation of iPod nano. But in 2011 – nada. But the long wait for some new nano love could be coming to an end soon, if some leaked pics of a purported seventh-gen iPod nano prove to be the real deal.
And it looks as if Apple could be reintroducing the camera for the new nano, with a device that looks just like the current nano incumbent but with a new snapper packed in. The leaked pictures from a Japanese site clearly show a hole on the clip and what looks like a lens.
The 5th generation iPod nano packed a video camera, but this was dropped for the super-small 6th generation clip-boasting model.
But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this before. Back in May 2011 we reported on a camera-friendly nano case turning up online from the very same Japanese website.
The camera the new nano will be packing is said to be just 1.3-megapixel and Chinese site M.I.C has stated that the leaked pictures show a two-month-old prototype; one with “big problems”. Apparently its auto iris lens is causing blurring in bright conditions as well as taking “overexposed photos”.
If it turns out to be real, the new iPod nano is murmured to be on course for a March / April release. We shall see….

APP OF THE DAY: Remarks review (iPad)
Take note….
Readdle is back with yet another note-taking app, this time in the form of Remarks which it describes as a new way to “write down your thoughts, capture ideas and information, annotate documents and outline notes anywhere from university class to sofa at home”.
But instead of capturing ideas and generally making our time on planet earth a little bit more meaningful, we decided to take Remarks for a spin by chucking in pictures of animals and writing incomprehensible notes. As you’ll see in today’s App of The Day.
Remarks
- Format
- iPad
- Price
- ?2.99
- Where
- iTunes
The first thing that you’ll probably want to know is how Remarks differs from Readdle’s PDF Expert App. Well, not a great deal to be honest except that it’s aimed a bit more at the casual user and things are a bit more streamlined.
But that’s not to say it isn’t still an incredibly useful app – it is. You’ll be making notes, annotating PDFs and sharing your creations left, right and centre before you know it. Literally we mean, you’ll be accidentally dragging your content all over the screen if you forget to switch off the drag control.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Allow us to rewind a little. Basically, Remarks is an app that treats whatever is on screen, whether that be a PDF file, an image or simply an empty text file, as your notepad. You can do with it what you want.
You can add typed notes with several font options, you can hand write notes using a varied selection of virtual pen and pencil types (with different thickness), you can highlight, you can chuck in shapes or arrow and you can insert pictures. It’s simple to use your finger but it’s obviously designed with styluses in mind (we used the Griffin Crayola one).

It’s all very easy to navigate, using the simple-to-use and well labelled toolbar at the top, and everything works very quickly, with rapid response times for turning pages, adding notes, going back to your library of notes or sharing your creations. There’s also a nifty zoom function that allows for some close control annotating.
Sharing is possible across email and, if your pals are using Remarks too, you can collaborate on works together. You can also print your notes and, coming soon, upload them to Dropbox or Box.net. At the moment, it does allow you to open files from Dropbox, but not save them directly (although there is a workaround by using an office app such as Docs to Go).

Remarks is a fully fledged PDF annotator with plenty of useful note-taking features thrown in, all wrapped up in a simple to use package. At less than ?3, it’s a steal.

Salma Hayek Shines at Paris Events
by Mike Krumboltz
Va-va-va-voom! Salma Hayek, 45, showed off her famous figure at two recent events, proving once again that she can’t not look good.
The stunning star attended the Paris premiere of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” in a black leather ensemble. Hayek paired the dress with a glamorous updo and suede boots. The belted outfit, with its three-quarter-length sleeves, struck that so-difficult-to-hit balance between provocative and demure.
A few days later, Hayek rocked a daring black lace dress at an event at Paris Couture Week. The wraparound gown, which Hayak paired with a sexy black choker from Yves Saint Laurent, showed off the actress’s gorgeous gams and, ahem, imposing cleavage.
Hayek attended the event with husband François-Henri Pinault. The Frenchman is chief executive officer of PPR, a multinational company that specializes in luxury retail brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Hayek and Pinault have one child together, a daughter. Pinault has three other children, including a son with model Linda Evangelista.

For the smartest phone of all
Smartphones apps aren’t just about games. There’s some educating to do out there if you’d care to tear yourself away from Fruit Ninja for just two minutes and we at Pocket-lint have amassed the very best Android apps for learning and reference so that you know where to start.
So, whether it’s spodding up for a pub quiz, indulging in your affair with outer space or simply learning how to speak the Queen’s English properly, you’ll find something to tickle your t?te here. Seek out, download, digest and achieve enlightenment.
NASA App
It’s a real pleasure to see an organisation like NASA have such a thoroughly good app available on Android. It’s simply packed with information and freebie media and without so much as an advert to pay for it. What’s another few quid when you’re in the business of sending men to the Moon?

NASA App brings you all the information on all of the current NASA missions including schedules as well as just what they’re trying to achieve. On top of that, there’s access to a vast library of space photos, the NASA YouTube channel, TV & Radio sections, the Twitter feed, but, probably best of all, are the ringtones which include speeches by JFK, bleeps and cheeps over the radio and, of course, immortal words like “the eagle has landed”.

Google Sky Map
Continuing on the cosmos, Google Sky Map is an absolute shoe-in for best apps on Android phones in general and there’s no way it wasn’t going to make this list. One of the original AR bits of software for Android phones, it allows you to wave your mobile around your head as you use it as a window to the stars and other celestial bodies.

Your mobile screen then shows you a map of outer space with everything in its correct positioned and all named too. Want to know what that bright star is that you’re looking at? Google Sky Map will tell you. If there’s too much to take in at once, then you can filter the sorts of things you’re looking for. Best of all, no data connection is required.

How to Tie a Tie
If you thought there was only one way to tie up a tie, then prepare to have your tiny mind blown. Then prepare to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror trying to perfect them with this How to Tie a Tie app. It’s a surprisingly well put together piece of software that takes you through the stages of each knot, step by step, with a picture of what you’re supposed to be doing at every turn.

There are 13 to master in total with familiars like the Half Windsor and the Simple Double to the rakish Kelvin and the fiendishly tricky Persian. There’s also the bonus of how to tie a bow tie as well. All in all, it’s an excellent download. The only trouble is that, to our eyes, all the knots rather look the same.

There’s loads of goodies in there for you to look at including the first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Charles Dickens’s handwritten draft of Nicholas Nickleby, Jane Austen’s teenage writings, the world’s oldest bible Codex Sinaiticus, Nelson’s Battle Plan – written before his victory at Trafalgar, Galileo’s letters and Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebooks. For those unfamiliar with the Bodlean Library, it’s the Oxford University central research library and it’s entitled to request a copy of any book that goes into print in the land. The point is that the Bod has put together a free app featuring some of its old faves for Android users to explore. You can’t read them but you can get an understanding of what some of these ancient tomes are all about and why they’re so important. World Atlas
There’s a few atlas apps for Android but the interesting thing about World Atlas is that it’s not really much of an atlas at all. That is to say that the map part of the equation is really not a big deal. In fact, it’s just Google Maps, really. The good part is all the other good population, geography, social and climate info that’s stuffed in along with it.

Largely, the app operates as a hub to all sorts of other services that provide the data but it’s presented in a good enough way to make it work. What we really enjoy though is the flag quiz that comes as part of it too.

Dictionary.com/Collins English Dictionary
While you’re doing all this learning and reading you might come across the odd word you don’t understand. No need to be ashamed. Instead, open up a good dictionary app like Dictionary.com and broaden your horizons a touch.

To be fair, there’s quite a few dictionary apps out there with the likes of the Farlex Dictionary and the Free Dictionary just as good. The problem, however, is that none of the freebies out there are a even a shade on a proper paid for version like the Collins English Dictionary app or the Oxford English Dictionary one either. Why? Because all the free ones are effectively American English dictionaries and not actual English ones, and, unfortunately, both the Collins and the Oxford are ludicrously expensive.

The only things that are holding it back at the moment is that not every business has bothered to put itself in the Phone Book over the last few years, with Google indexing offering more relevance.?Once that comes together, or BT agrees a deal with another data rich review service, then it’s going to be a real winner. To be fair to all the others, it’s basically the same. In fact, all the Wikipedia apps are basically the same. So, we won’t blame you for sticking with Wikidroid if you’d rather.

The Wikipedia Android app presents the text in any one of 280 languages, it supports voice search, offers random articles and, best of all, you can save pages for offline use as well. The whole thing is neatly presented and optimised for the small screen with a good column width, text size and lots of collapsible sections.
